Yes, it is mine...you know how you buy that piece of clothing in a foreign country because it looks so right there but on returning home you realize you will never wear it.

Well one year I was in London in January when Harrods had their crazy clearance sales, and the hat was just so fascinating. The next day the reality of packing it for the return trip hit me and I finally had to give up and wear it home.

This is where it all paid off. While I was waiting to board, the gate counter called me up and asked if I would mind being bumped to FIRST CLASS...not Business, but FIRST CLASS. Would I mind??? Well what an eye opener to see how the privileged travel. Most of my fellow first classer's were a rock band and their leggy blonde girlfriends, but it didn't interfere with my best flight ever (and I have been flying internationally since I was 7). It had to be the HAT! So every now and then I pull the hat from the back closet and dream about being bumped to first class again (which of course has never repeated)...hmm maybe I should start wearing it for all my flights.

We are obsessed with Herdwick sheep and look for them whenever we are traveling in the Lake District.

Explore Takeover March 26, 2025

"They can be left to roam free on the fells with very little human intervention. It’s known as being ‘heafed’ or ‘hefted’ - the process by which they actually belong to and are part of the landscape itself. Each flock carries knowledge down through generations of mothers so that each sheep instinctively knows how to not only survive, but thrive in a harsh environment.

They can survive the harshest of winters and there are many reports of them being dug out alive after days trapped in snowdrifts. There are even reports of sheep which have survived such conditions by eating their own fleece whilst waiting for rescue.

They may look cute but they are seriously tough cookies and they always get right of way on single-track roads."

On rare occasions for photographers there is that moment when all of the of the pieces fit together. I have been taking pictures of spring lambs in the Pennines for years. I have come away with some I love, but never that perfect moment.

This visit we came driving over a hill in our evening "bouncing lamb quest" and there they were, as if to say, "Where have your been all this time, we have been waiting right here".

Pali da casada are easy to spot as they’re brightly colored, often painted with a spiral pattern like a barbershop pole, and usually clustered at the water door or side door to palaces, offices or hotels along the canals of Venice. Unlike the plain paline though, pali are not mooring poles. They were originally designed to help gondoliers recognize houses, salons and casinos and, at night, would have had an oil lamp on the top to illuminate the palina mooring point. Today the oil lamp is long gone, but many pali are still topped off by a cappellozzo, a stylized, carved representation of a flame. ~L'Italo-Americano

The word architect comes from two Greek words "chief" and "creator". When I saw these wonders, I was thinking, why wouldn't we give at least the same credit to the architect of these arches as we do to the architects of manmade wonders?

Have your heard of those? Well, neither had I until we were designing the cast stone fireplace for our little storybook style house. The Lawson's never do things by halves and having waited a longtime for a fireplace, we decided it needed all of the parts. Someday I'll post an image of the whole fireplace.

I did however pride myself in taking a more frugal approach to decorating the mantle having found the giant candlesticks at a garage sale for 5 bucks each...:-))

I was quite young and not nearly as experienced when I took this photo. This was not posed, I had my camera in hand but down on the strap, he was a little distance and on a slightly lower level. I sensed he was watching me, as our guide spoke with other tribe members. I met his eyes and just took the shot without raising the viewfinder to my eye. It was an incredibly fortunate moment!

I'm so proud of this image, my first wild raptor. He was hanging out on a fencepost by a bayou not far from Lake Michigan. Evidently they are seen around the Great Lakes during migration. According to my research this one is a juvenile light morph broad-wing, however I'm no birder so feel free to correct me if I have this wrong. Some of my commenters feel it is a young red-tail hawk and they could well be correct. Per the google pics and my experience with seeing red tails, it most closely resembled a broad wing, but I will go down the middle since birding isn't my specialty.

This is a Black and White Ruffed Lemur. It is a critically endangered species that lives in the wild only on Madagascar.

Should we care? You might think not, but dig deeper, the issues are much more complex and in this case there is no black and white, the consequences are much more nuanced when it comes to understanding what the wildlife population numbers mean. We kid ourselves though if we think this means they don't matter. Are zoos good or bad?..an interesting article in the link below.

...and that is about the extent of the harvest. They were patio plants and the sweet little black squirrel turned into a monster and began stealing tomatoes. Moved all the plants to the upstairs deck and the little tyke figured out how to climb the drainpipe. After a pitched battle all summer these are what we came away with...along with a few other cherry tomatoes that survived. The little black squirrel is fat and happy though.

This is Sarah, she is a terracotta copy of a famous Victorian garden statue. We searched for years for a bust to put on the fireplace mantle and found her buried in the back of an antique store in southern England. The trick was returning her to the States with us. She weighs a ton and is fragile. We did manage to put her in a carry-on and a very kind purser put it in the flight attendant's closet.

“...don't bother to learn more than the simplest facts of flight - how to get from shore to food and back again. For most gulls it's not flying that matters but eating."

“Why is it,” Jonathan puzzled, “that the hardest thing in the world is to convince a bird that he is free, and that he can prove it for himself if he’d just spend a little time practicing? Why should that be so hard?”
